Summary

The question

New consultants often spin on a problem rather than ask for help, which costs time and damages trust. The report asked why that happens and what a junior consultant can do about it on day one.

What I did

  • Analyzed two resources in the consulting community, the International Council of Management Consulting Institutes and Consulting Magazine, for what they offer junior staff.
  • Defined the communication problem using industry and academic sources on team structure, hierarchy, and the cost of miscommunication.
  • Recommended two habits, targeted prepared questions and active listening, and revised three professional email cases (delivering bad news, improving written communication, and fact-checking a claim).

What it showed

Asking for help is a skill. Arriving with a specific question, what you have tried, and what you need turns an interruption into a short, useful conversation.

From the work

Management consulting is regarded as a high pace learning environment, where consultants gain understanding and industry knowledge through real-world project experiences, especially from senior team members. Consultants often struggle to ask senior team members for assistance, and with tight timeframes this can lead to project delays and hinder the career progression of young professionals.

Report, executive summary

In my words

This was a business communication project focused on why junior consultants hesitate to ask senior colleagues for help. It became more relevant once I entered consulting myself. The project reinforced that good communication is part of strong analytical work – especially knowing when to ask a question, how much context to provide, and how to make it easy for someone to help.
